Kajan and Aviza lift the Red Storm to a pair of shutout victories
After helping the St. John's women's soccer team to a pair of shutout victories last week, Zsani Kajan and Shannon Aviza have been recognized by the conference for their efforts. Kajan has been named the league's offensive player of the week while Aviza has found a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Â
Kajan, the BIG EAST leading scorer, has earned a spot as the league's top player of the week after recording her second hat trick of the season and the fourth of her Red Storm career on Sunday evening at Creighton. After her stellar three-goal outing, Kajan leads the nation with 15 goals on season.
Â
Following a four-hour weather delay in Omaha on Sunday, Kajan was quick to find the back of the net, as she converted on a goal in the fifth minute. Twelve minutes later, the Budapest, Hungary, native struck again before completing the hat trick in the 78th minute.
Â
With a trio of goals against Creighton, Kajan has now found the back of the net 15 times for the Red Storm this year to tie Adriana Viola for the fourth-most in a single season. The Budapest, Hungary, native has bumped her career total up to 43 goals to take over sole possession of second place on the program's all-time scoring list.
Â
The graduate student totaled 10 shots in the 2-0-0 week for St. John's, second-most among BIG EAST players.
Â
Aviza, a graduate student from Medway, Mass., led the Red Storm defense to a pair of shutout victories last week. The 5-foot-9 defender and the rest of the St. John's backline limited opponents to just four shots on goal last week as the Red Storm outshot Seton Hall and Creighton by a 27-12 margin, including 14-4 on target.
Â
With the win over the Bluejays, St. John's clinched a BIG EAST Championship berth, while also giving the Red Storm the potential of hosting a First Round game.
Â
Kajan, Aviza and the rest of the Red Storm squad return to action on Thursday when the team welcomes Villanova to Belson Stadium. The two programs are set to kick off at 7 p.m. on FloSports.
