St. John’s Drops Five-Set Match at Villanova

Rachele Rastelli posted a match-high 18 kills in the loss
VILLANOVA, PA (Oct. 30, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Villanova in five sets on Saturday night.
The Wildcats took the first set, 25-22, before St. John's (14-12, 5-7 BIG EAST) captured the next two sets, 25-21, and 25-22, respectively. Villanova closed the match with set scores of 26-24, and 15-8, respectively.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Rachele Rastelli recorded a match-high 18 kills to go along with eight digs, two block assists and a service ace.
Giorgia Walther tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs along with three block assists while Ariadni Kathariou posted 10 block assists and nine kills. Maria Angelica Palacios contributed seven kills and five block assists while Eleonora Tosi added in eight kills and three block assists.
Tiziana Baumrukova recorded 26 assists while Wiktoria Kowalczyk notched 15 helpers along with four kills and nine block assists. Sheena Yoshioka tallied three service aces, one kill and 15 digs while Iliana Rodriguez added in two service aces.
St. John's recorded 16 blocks in comparison to Villanova's six.
The Red Storm got off to a 10-7 lead in the first set before Villanova (14-10, 6-6 BIG EAST) rallied to knot the score at 13. The Johnnies were up by two at 20-18, when Villanova pounded in a 7-2 run to take the set, 25-22.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair up until the Wildcats were within two at 21-19. St. John's captured four of the next six points to take the set, 25-21.
The Johnnies jumped out with the first two points of the third set that paved the way for the set victory. St. John's held the lead for the whole set before an attack error gave it the set, 25-22.
Down 4-2 in the fourth set, the Red Storm leapt out to eight straight points to take the lead, 10-4. Five of the points came from errors. With the Wildcats within two at 10-8, St. John's recorded an 8-2 run to widen its lead to 18-10. Tosi tallied two kills during the spurt. With the Red Storm at set point, Villanova threw in seven straight points to capture the set, 26-24.
The fifth set was dominated by Villanova as it took the first point of the set and did not slow down. A Kathleen Johnson kill closed the set, 15-8.
St. John's will kick off a four-game homestand next weekend starting with a match against DePaul on Friday at 7 p.m.
