St. John’s Defeats Xavier in Four Sets

CINCINATTI, OH (Oct. 9, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team defeated Xavier in four sets on Saturday afternoon.
St. John's took the first two sets, 26-24, and ,25-14, respectively before Xavier won the third set, 25-20. The Johnnies closed the fourth set, 28-26.
Rachele Rastelli posted a match-high 21 kills on a .283 hitting percentage along with two service aces, two solo blocks, and two block assists.
Eleonora Tosi recorded 12 kills on a .429 clip to go along with a service ace and two block assists while Giorgia Walther added in 10 digs, nine kills, two service aces, two block assists, and a solo block.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk contributed 18 helpers and one service ace while Tiziana Baumrukova set a team-high 22 assists and 12 digs.
Defensively, Sheena Yoshioka captured 18 digs while Maria Angelica Palacios recorded seven block assists.
With St. John's (12-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) up 12-8 in the first set, the Musketeers (9-7, 4-2 BIG EAST) fired eight straight points to take the lead, 16-12. The Johnnies responded tying the match at 16 before an attack error and a Walther service ace gave them the set, 26-24.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the second set. The run was marked with double kills by Rastelli and Jovana Askovic. The Musketeers could not overcome this deficit and St. John's captured the set, 25-14.
With Xavier down 8-7, it went off on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 12-8. The Red Storm got within two at 13-11 but could not close the lead further. A service error would ultimately end the set 25-20 in Xavier's favor.
The fourth set was tied at 13 when Xavier recorded five straight points to take an 18-13 lead. The Red Storm responded by tying the match at 22. The Johnnies closed the set, 28-26, on a Rastelli kill and a block by Askovic and Palacios.
The Red Storm will continue its mid-west road swing when it plays Marquette on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.
