The Red Storm ties for a program record with 14 made three-pointers
QUEENS, N.Y.- Behind a career-high 24 points from junior guard Unique Drake and a record-tying 14 made three-point field goals, the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Yale, 86-68, on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
With 14 made shots from the beyond-the-arc, the Red Storm squad tied a program record set on Dec. 30, 2007 when the Johnnies drained 14 against Morgan State.
Drake converted on 10 of her 18 attempts from the floor, including a 3-of-6 mark from distance. The Columbia, S.C., native was one of three Johnnies to set new personal-bests in scoring on the afternoon. In just her fourth game donning a St. John's uniform, Danielle Cosgrove poured in 18 points to establish a new career high. Sara Zabrecky chipped in a career-best nine points, knocking down a trio of long-range buckets.
Two other starters, Camree Clegg and Kadaja Bailey, reached double figures, finishing with 13 and 14 points, respectively. This win marks the 18th all-time victory for the Johnnies against an Ivy League opponent.
The Red Storm and Bulldogs traded buckets in the early going of the first quarter with Yale taking a 10-7 lead into the first media timeout. The Johnnies began to chip away at the Bulldogs advantage down the stretch, as the two programs closed the opening period tied at 19. Drake and Clegg scored seven points each to lead the way for the Johnnies in the first stanza.
The second quarter was an offensive explosion for the Red Storm, as it rattled off a 13-0 run to take a commanding 13-point lead into the half, 47-34. Cosgrove scored 11 points to top the scoring column after 20 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs managed to hang around in the third period, never allowing St. John's to stretch the lead to more than 14 points. The Red Storm pulled away from Yale in the final frame behind clutch shots from Cosgrove and Bailey.
The signature play of the day came from the game's leading scorer. With less than two minutes to go, Drake stole the ball from Yale's Ayla Elam and scored a tough layup for a new career best. The Red Storm closed out the remaining moments and secured a strong victory over the Bulldogs.
Up next, St. John's will travel down to Estero, Fla., to take on Penn State in the Gulf Coast Showcase. The game is scheduled to tip off on Friday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m.
