Johnnies see their historic season come to an end
The St. John's women's soccer team saw its historic season come to an end on Sunday evening with a 7-1 loss to the top-seeded Duke Blue Devils.
The Red Storm (13-7-3) posted its best season in program history, making its fourth ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and its first to the Round of 16.
Maia Cabrera, the Rego Park, N.Y., native, registered the Johnnies' lone goal of the match. The score marked Cabrera's third of the season and the sixth of her Red Storm career. Jessica Garziano, who had nine assists on the campaign entering Sunday's contest, picked up her 10th helper of the year.
The Blue Devils' (16-3-1) Michelle Cooper fired off a pair of early shots before breaking though on her third attempt in the fourth minute to give Duke an early 1-0 advantage.
The home team continued to control the offensive momentum over the remainder of the half. Tess Boade and Cooper converted on goals in the 26th and 28th minutes to take a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
Coming out of the locker room, Cabrera broke through on the Red Storm's first attempt of the game in the 47th minute to put the Johnnies on the board. The sequence began on a corner kick from Garziano, who found Cabrera in the box. Cabrera then headed the ball past the Blue Devils' keeper to cut the Johnnies' deficit down to two, 3-1.
Four minutes later, Cabrera registered Red Storm's second opportunity of the evening, but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
Duke grew its lead to 5-1 with a little over 20 minutes to play, as Mackenzie Pluck and Olivia Migli both scored.
With nine minutes remaining, the Blue Devils converted on back-to-back scores from Migli and Grace Watkins to lock in the victory.
