St. John’s Falls to No. 21 Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. (Nov. 21, 2021) – After upsetting then-No. 16 Creighton earlier in the season, the St. John's volleyball team fell in three sets to the No. 21 Bluejays on Sunday afternoon.
The game, which aired on FS1, marked the end of the BIG EAST season for the Red Storm (15-17, 6-12 BIG EAST).
With the victory, Creighton (28-3, 16-2 BIG EAST) won a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship for the eighth consecutive season.
After dropping the first set, 25-12, the Johnnies clawed back and narrowly dropped the second set, 26-24. The final set went to Creighton, 25-20.
Giorgia Walther posted a team-high 10 kills while Eleonora Tosi notched eight kills, two block assists, and the lone Red Storm solo block.
Ariadni Kathariou, the BIG EAST's leader in blocks, contributed two service aces and three block assists while Iliana Rodriguez and Bree Martin both added one ace. Wiktoria Kowalczyk recorded two back-to-back aces and 18 assists while Sheena Yoshioka notched a match-high 18 digs.
Amariis Garcia added three block assists and two kills while Jovana Askovic recorded two kills and two block assists.
The first set was all Creighton, as the Bluejays recorded eight straight points early on to get ahead, 18-8. A Jaela Zimmerman kill closed the set at 25-12.
With St. John's up two, 10-8, midway through the second set, the Bluejays went off on a 5-0 run to move ahead, 13-10. The Johnnies did not back down, tying the set at 15. The game tied five more times before it was knotted at 24. Walther and Tosi tallied five kills apiece in the second set, however two consecutive points from Creighton gave it the set, 26-24.
The third set was neck-and-neck up until the two teams were in a stand-still at 20. Creighton jumped out to a 5-0 run to close the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.
