Junior midfielder tallied 12 points during historic season for the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. – A consummate student-athlete both on and off the pitch, Jessica Garziano has been named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-East Region Team.
Â
Garziano, a junior midfielder, played an integral role in the Red Storm's success this season. The Melville, N.Y., native tallied a goal and 10 assists in 22 appearances, all of which were starts, ranking second in the BIG EAST and tying for 25th nationally in total assists. Garziano finished just one assist shy of the program high-water mark for helpers in a campaign, and turned in the highest single-season total since Kaitlin Schmidt matched the Red Storm record with 11 assists in 2003.
Â
Garziano logged five of her assists in nine BIG EAST appearances, including a two-assist effort in a 3-0 win at UConn to open league play on Sept. 23.Â
Â
Garziano also picked up a helper in each of the Red Storm's final two NCAA Tournament matches, assisting on Nicole Gordon's opening strike against Samford and Maia Cabrera's marker against Duke in the Round of 16. In the penalty shootout against Samford, Garziano also set the tone with a first-round goal for the Red Storm.Â
Â
With Garziano serving as one of the team's veteran leaders, the Red Storm enjoyed arguably its most successful season in program history this fall. After finishing fourth in the BIG EAST with a record of 6-3-1, St. John's defeated Providence in the conference quarterfinals before upsetting top-seeded Xavier, then ranked no. 11 in the nation, on its home field in the semifinals. After falling to Georgetown in the program's first BIG EAST title appearance since 1994, St. John's earned an at-large bid to the field of 64 before knocking off Brown and Samford to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time. 2021 marked the Red Storm's fourth NCAA Tournament berth since 2009.
Â
An education major, Garziano boasts a 3.89 cumulative GPA.
