Unique Drake leads the way for the Red Storm with 16 points
The St. John's women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 59-43, in its regular-season finale at Carnesecca Arena on Monday evening.
The Red Storm (7-14, 4-12 BIG EAST) will be the no. 8 seed in this week's BIG EAST Tournament. The Johnnies will play Xavier at 11 a.m. on Friday in the opening session of the tournament.
Unique Drake led the Red Storm in scoring for the third-straight game. The Columbia, S.C., native finished with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, converting on both of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Raven Farley and Kadaja Bailey chipped in eight points apiece for St. John's. Farley fell just short of eclipsing the 10-rebound mark, pulling down a team-high nine boards on the evening. The Elizabeth, N.J., native also recorded three blocked shots for St. John's.
Farley found the bottom of the basket in the opening seconds of the first frame, setting St. John's up for an early lead. The Pirates quickly responded, unleashing a 9-2 run to jump ahead by five, 9-4. The two programs battled back-and-forth over the remainder of the quarter, with Seton Hall (14-6, 12-5 BIG EAST) holding on to its five-point lead, 17-12, after 10 minutes of action.
The Pirates fired off a 12-3 run to open the second stanza, ballooning their lead to 14, 29-15. With under two minutes remaining in the half, Drake drained a shot from beyond the arc, cutting the Johnnies' deficit down to 11, 29-18, at the intermission.
Drake carried that momentum over into the third period, converting from downtown to pull the Red Storm back within eight, 29-21. The Pirates answered with a 7-0 run to jump ahead by 15, 36-21.
The Johnnies began to chip away at the Pirates' lead over the next five-and-a-half minutes, getting back within seven, 40-33. With under two minutes to play in the third, Seton Hall used six unanswered points to grow its advantage to 13, 46-33.
The Pirates extended their lead to 15, 48-33, in the early seconds of the fourth quarter. St. John's made one final push, unleashing an 8-2 run to cut the lead to nine, 50-41. That was as close as St. John's would get, as Seton Hall sealed the victory.
