Pirates rally from a two-goal deficit in the second half
Trailing 2-0 after 55 minutes of play, No. 22 Seton Hall rallied for a 3-2 overtime win on Wednesday night at Belson Stadium.
With the game in a scoreless tie at the half, St. John's (4-4-0, 2-4-0 BIG EAST) found the back of the net twice in the opening seven minutes of the latter stanza. Seton Hall (6-1-2, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) answered in the 56th minute before tallying the equalizer in the 74th. The Pirates then added a golden goal with just under three minutes gone in the overtime period.
Wesley Leggett and Jared Juleau scored the St. John's goals off assists from Tani Oluwaseyi and Einar Lye, respectively. Leggett's goal was his third of the year, good enough for second on the squad, while Juleau found the back of the net for the second time this season.
JP Marin, CJ Tibbling and Raz Amir provided the goals for Seton Hall. Marin also registered an assist for the Pirates, as did Mattias Sundell and Denis Kelmendi.
The Red Storm recorded the first scoring chance of the evening, as Lye headed a shot just left of the bar in the third minute of action.
After about 10 minutes of game action, the Pirates began to turn momentum in their favor, recording three shots in the span of about 15 minutes and controlling possession for a majority of that span. Luka Gavran needed to make only one stop to keep Seton Hall off the board.
The final 10 minutes of the opening half featured a pair of Red Storm chances, but Seton Hall was able to escape the first half unscathed as the two teams went into the locker room scoreless.
Shots were 3-3 in the first half with each team putting one try on target.
The Red Storm wasted no time coming out of the intermission, as Oluwaseyi and Leggett capitalized on an early Seton Hall turnover to each record a shot on goal in the opening 20 seconds of action. Seton Hall keeper Andreas Nota came away with a stop on both occasions.
Less than five minutes later, the Red Storm broke through. Juleau sent a ball from the left side to the top of the six for Oluwaseyi, who headed it off the near post. The rebound made its way across the goal mouth to Leggett, who buried it home and put the Red Storm ahead 1-0.
Just three minutes after helping set up the first goal, Juleau etched his name on the score sheet. Oluwaseyi and Lye had shots blocked in the box before the rebound made its way to the sophomore. Juleau then sent a left-footed blast from just inside the 18 into the top-right corner of the cage.
A little less than four minutes later, Seton Hall got on the board after a penalty kick was awarded to Marin in the 56th minute.
The Pirates equalized in the 73rd minute on a goal from Tibbling, as the junior striker brilliantly controlled a loose ball in front before beating Jan Hoffelner.
Still tied after 90 minutes of action, the contest went into overtime, where Amir gained possession of a Kelmendi cross in front of Hoffelner before poking a shot off the post and into the net.
The Red Storm will return to BIG EAST action on Saturday, traveling to Storrs for a 2 p.m. meeting with the UConn Huskies.
