Isabelle Aviza records her first goal of the season
For the second time in as many games, the St. John's women's soccer team played the Providence Friars to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Sunday at Belson Stadium to close out the season.
Prior to the start of the game seniors Jordan Kamp, Emily Purtell, Annie Wysong, Maia Cabrera, Zsani Kajan, Samantha Gordon and Alex Madden were all recognized for their contributions both on and off the pitch.
Sophomore forward Isabelle Aviza opened up scoring in the 35th minute. The sequence began as Madden brilliantly controlled a loose ball before sending a shot toward the cage that was blocked by the Friars' goalkeeper. Aviza, however, corralled the rebound before tapping the ball into the left corner of the cage. The goal marked the first for Aviza this season and the second of her Red Storm career.
Providence (7-2-3, 5-2-3 BIG EAST) controlled the momentum in the early going of the contest, registering the game's first two chances in the opening four minutes of play. The Red Storm's defense, however, held strong and kept the Friars from finding the back of the net.
With 10 minutes remaining in the opening half and both teams scoreless, St. John's (5-4-3, 2-4-3 BIG EAST) struck first, as Aviza sent one home to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead at the intermission. Madden picked up an assist on Aviza's score.
At the half, St. John's and Providence had each tallied two shots apiece, while the Johnnies held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.
The Friars tied the game in the 81st minute, as Christina Rodgers converted on a penalty kick to knot the score at, 1-1.
Freshman midfielder Ava Collins fired off a pair of shot attempts over the final four minutes of regulation, but she could not find the back of the net as the two teams went into overtime for the second-consecutive game.
In the two overtime periods, neither team managed to pick up a shot as the two programs wrapped up the 2021 spring slate in a draw.
