St. John’s Service Week took place in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day
The St. John's Athletics Department hosted its first-ever Service Week in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day on April 6.
The Red Storm Athletics Department partnered with the Academic Service Learning department on campus to help give back to the community.
"Giving back to the New York City community is a staple of our athletic department's commitment to excellence," Director of Athletics Mike Cragg said. "I could not be more proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff members in rallying together in unprecedented ways to continue those values on our day of service. Thank you to all who helped organize this day, and we can't wait to find new ways to support our community going forward."
As a part of the department's inaugural Service Week, St. John's student-athletes, along with coaches and staff members collaborated with four different organizations. These groups included Let's Get Moving, Momma's House, Chapin Home for the Aging and Go4theGoal.
"I cannot begin to express just how grateful we are to the St. John's athletic community for their willingness to help support kids battling cancer in New York," said Karen Flint, the Director of Athletics for the Go4theGoal foundation. "This has been an incredibly challenging year with a significant decrease in funding. With that said, we have not turned down any requests for financial assistance for patients and their families as they are struggling even more during this difficult time. Because of the generosity of St. John's, we will be able to continue our efforts to make a difference in their lives."
In addition to participating in the Go4theGoal virtual 5K run, St. John's student-athletes, coaches and staff members created video messages in support of the Let's Get Moving campaign for the New Alternatives for Children (NAC). The NAC is an award-winning child welfare agency offering strength-based social services, medical and mental healthcare, and a wide variety of wrap-around services. The Red Storm athletes also donated goods to the Momma's House for young mothers and made virtual visits with residents with the Chapin Home for the Aging.
St. John's aims to make Service Week an annual tradition around National Student-Athlete Day.
