The Red Storm enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed
The St. John's women's golf team travels to Fort Meyers, Fla., this weekend to compete in the 2021 BIG EAST Championship held at the Club at Gateway from April 23-25.
Â
The competition, which begins Friday, is scheduled for 54 holes over three days. Friday's first-round threesomes will be determined by team and player seedings, while Saturday's and Sunday's groupings are assembled from the previous day's leaderboard. The BIG EAST will crown a team champion on Sunday, which earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The individual champion also receives an NCAA Championship invitation. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. each morning.
Â
After receiving runner-up honors in its final event of the season, the Red Storm enters the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed to sit ahead of Seton Hall, Butler and Creighton in the league standings. The Johnnies led the BIG EAST in team titles over the 2021 regular season, finishing first in three of their five events.
Â
St. John's lineup will be comprised of graduate student Linda Wang, freshman Angelica Kusnowo, sophomore Cloe Clocchiatti, junior Jessie Kweon and senior Andrea Sanchez.
Â
Kusnowo, the rookie from Chino Hills, Calif., enters postseason action ranked second among the league's players by GolfStat. She has recorded three top-five finishes this season and is boasting a 75.00 average score. Kusnowo produced her best effort of the year in the final round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, shooting a season-best 69 to earn BIG EAST Golfer of the Week. Kusnowo is one of just three league golfers to shoot a 69 or better over the 2021 spring slate.
Â
Wang, who enters the event as the team's number one golfer, ranks third in the BIG EAST by GolfStat. The Fresh Meadows, N.Y., native is posting a 75.63 stroke average and has finished inside the top-10 in all five events this season, including three top-five finishes.
Â
In 2005 the Johnnies earned the BIG EAST team title for the first time in school history. The Red Storm has produced the event's individual medalist on two different occasions, as Harin Lee captured both, winning in 2011 and again in 2014.
Â
Live scoring for all three days will be available via GolfStat, and all results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each round.
