Bowie, Forster earns accolades on behalf of St. John’s
The BIG EAST announced its Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award winners on Wednesday, as Gretchen Bowie and Matt Forster claimed the accolades on behalf of St. John's.
In recognition of their efforts on and off the fields of competition, both Bowie and Forster will each receive $2,000 to be applied toward graduate or professional study.
One of the most decorated players in the history of St. John's softball, Bowie earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team for the fourth time in as many opportunities this spring after hitting .340 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in just 31 games.
Bowie, who graduated from St. John's with a master's degree and a 4.0 GPA this spring and will begin a career in secondary education this fall, played in 200 career games, all of them starts, with the Johnnies over five years. She wrapped her Red Storm tenure as the program's career leader in triples (13) while hitting .320 with 40 home runs, 152 RBIs and 41 doubles. Her 152 RBIs are two shy of the program's high-water mark while her 40 roundtrippers are three shy of the Red Storm record shared by Erin Burner and Krystal Puga.
Off the field, the Sparta, N.J., native played an active leadership role in the Red Storm's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and served as a member of the department's COVID-19 Task Force.
Forster also recently wrapped his fifth year with the Red Storm, appearing in eight matches and making five starts during the abbreviated spring season. As a senior in 2019, Forster played a key role during the Red Storm's best season in nearly a decade, recording 14 starts for a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the first time since 2008. As a junior in 2018, Forster earned three separate selections to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll while leading the team in goals (6), assists (4) and points (16). After missing almost all of his freshman year in 2016, Forster scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists as a sophomore in 2017, helping the Red Storm reach the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2011.
Forster will return as a graduate student for a sixth year with the program this upcoming fall. The Bedford, England, native currently sports a 3.78 GPA in the STEM Business MBA program.
