St. John’s Wins Fifth Straight Jack Kaiser Classic

The Red Storm defeated Army to conclude a 3-0 weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2021) – After winning a pair of five-set matches on Friday, the St. John's volleyball team swept Army on Saturday afternoon to record its fifth straight Jack Kaiser Classic win.
Set scores were 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16, respectively, all in favor of the Red Storm.
Rachele Rastelli, Klara Mikelova, and Giorgia Walther were named to the Jack Kaiser Classic All- Tournament Team following stellar performances over the two-day slate. Rastelli, who tallied a career-high 31 kills against Boston College on Friday night, was named tournament MVP after registering 65 kills on the weekend and averaging 5.0 kills per set over three contests.
In the victory against Army, Rastelli put down a match-high 14 kills with a .455 hitting percentage. She also contributed eight digs and three blocks.
Efrosini Alexakou tallied 10 kills and one service ace while Walther notched nine kills on a .467 hitting percentage. Tiziana Baumrukova recorded the lone solo block for the Red Storm along with one service ace and 39 assists. Mikelova and Eleonora Tosi also added in one service ace each. Ariadni Kathariou needed just seven total attacks to record six kills and tallied a team-high four blocks against the Black Knights.
The Johnnies came out firing in the first set to take an early 9-4 lead. The Black Knights got within four, 11-7, before the Red Storm tallied four straight points to kick start a 14-8 run and close out the set. Rastelli recorded four kills on just four attacks in the opening frame while the Johnnies hit .556 as a team.
The start of the second set was a back-and-forth affair, as the teams tied eight times before the Black Knights moved ahead by two, 14-12. From there, Rastelli tallied two kills on a 5-0 run to give St. John's a 17-14 edge, its largest lead of the set to that point. The Johnnies climbed ahead by as many as four, 21-17, before closing out the set, 25-22. Alexakou recorded four kills in the Johnnies' set-two victory.
The Black Knights registered the first two points of the third set before the Johnnies responded with a 6-1 run. Army battled back to tie the set at seven, but St. John's responded with eight of the next 10 points to make it 15-9 in favor of the Red Storm. Army answered with back-to-back points before an Alexakou kill kick started a 7-1 run to put the Johnnies ahead by double digits, 22-12. The Red Storm would go on to win the set, 25-16.
St. John's will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Stony Brook for a 6 p.m. match with the Seawolves.
