The St. John's men's and women's tennis programs hosted their first event at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills on Tuesday night, raising funds for the programs while connecting alumni and supporters of several different generations.
Members of the tennis community were joined by Red Storm coaches and current players for an enjoyable evening of tennis. Over 30 players took to the courts for a friendly round-robin tournament. The tennis action was rounded out by a one-point wooden racket tournament before the event concluded with a cocktail reception.
"It's great for us all to be apart of the inaugural West Side Tennis Club Event," said Athletic Director Mike Cragg to the attendees. "This is only going to get bigger and it's only going to get better going forward, but it started tonight."
The West Side Tennis Club was established in 1892 and played host to the U.S Open Grand Slam Tournament for more than 60 years until 1978 when it was moved to the U.S. National Tennis Center. Today, the state-of-the-art facility is home to 40 courts on five different surfaces. For more information about the West Side Tennis Club visit their website.
Both the men's and women's tennis programs will begin their fall slate this upcoming weekend. The women's team will make the short trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing for the Columbia Invite, while the men's squad will journey to the University of Pennsylvania for the Penn Invitational.
