St. John's (4-2-1) played even with the Bulldogs (1-7) for most of the first half before Mia Grillo broke a scoreless deadlock in the 45th minute. Fourteen minutes later, Yale added another tally off the foot of Chloe Laureano to put the game out of reach.
St.-Jean recorded the Red Storm's first chance of the afternoon in the 24th minute, but saw her attempt sail wide to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
The Johnnies nearly broke through in the 30th minute as Zsani Kajan, the Red Storm's leading scorer, sent a corner kick into the box for Garziano. The Melville, N.Y., native's attempt went over the crossbar to keep both teams scoreless.
Purtell registered the Red Storm's final attempt of the first half in the 37th minute, but could not convert as Yale's keeper made a diving save to prevent the Johnnies from getting on the board.
With the clock winding down and just seconds to play in the half, Yale's Alanna Butcher sent a high pass across the box to Grillo. The senior forward finished top shelf to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Through the first 45 minutes of action, Yale outshot the Johnnies by a 5-3 margin.
In the 59th minute, Laureano converted on a direct kick to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and lock in the victory.
