Red Storm will continue homestand against local foes
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will resume its homestand with a pair of games over Labor Day Weekend, hosting Marist on Saturday before welcoming crosstown foe Fordham to Belson Stadium on Monday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. kick-offs and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Tickets for both games are available by visiting RedStormTix.com or calling 1-888-GO-STORM. The box office will be open for walk-up sales starting one hour before kick-off. Admission to Belson Stadium is free for all St. John's student.
After suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of No. 6 Clemson on the road to open the 2021 campaign, the Red Storm came out firing in its home opener at Belson Stadium on Monday night during a 3-0 win over UAlbany. Brandon Knapp tied a career-high with four points, scoring the game-winner in the 25th and assisting on insurance markers in the 45th and 52nd minutes. Lucas Bartlett headed home his first goal as a Johnnie following a Knapp free kick toward the end of the first half before Knapp and Jared Juleau connected on a pair of nifty passes to set up Wesley Leggett's first tally of the campaign. Leggett, who transferred to St. John's from Connecticut following the 2019 season, has now scored four goals in just nine games as a Johnnie.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Luka Gavran recorded the first solo shutout of his career on Monday night, stopping both of the Great Danes' shots that found their target. Over the previous two seasons, the Hamilton, Ont., native had played a part in 12 combined clean sheets with teammate Jan Hoffelner. This past spring, Gavran appeared in all 10 matches for the Johnnies, compiling a 0.72 goals against average to go along with an .846 save percentage, good enough for third and second, respectively, in the BIG EAST for those categories.
St. John's, who is in the midst of a five-game homestand to wrap up the pre-conference portion of its schedule, will look to continue a string of success at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm has won seven straight non-conference games at Belson dating back to 2018. In the fall of 2019, St. John's went 7-1-0 on campus during the regular season with the team's only loss coming to Georgetown, the eventual national champion. Since the venue opened in 2002, St. John's is 117-41-32 at Belson Stadium, good enough for a winning percentage of .700. After hosting Marist and Fordham, St. John's will close out its homestand with games against Boston University (Sept. 10) and Columbia (Sept. 13).
Marist will make the journey down to Queens after splitting a pair of games on the road this past weekend. The Red Foxes were victorious in their season opener at Saint Joseph's downing the Hawks, 1-0, on an 11th minute goal from Rutgers transfer Kyle Galloway. Goalkeeper Sam Ilin made four saves to pick up the clean sheet.
Three days later at Navy, Marist came out on the wrong end of another 1-0 decision. Shots were 19-9 in favor of the Midshipmen, as Ilin made eight stops to keep the game close.
Marist was scheduled to play seven games this past spring against conference competition, but COVID-19 concerns forced the cancelation of all seven contests. In 2019, the Red Foxes went 10-9-0, including a 6-4-0 MAAC record, and advanced to the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament. Marist returns four of its top five point producers from that 2019 campaign, led by Stefan Copetti (5G, 6A) and Huib Achterkamp (6G, 0A). Justin Jaime (4G, 3A) and Skylar Conway (3G, 4A) also recorded double-digit points for the Red Foxes in 2019.
St. John's and Marist will meet for the 19th time in the history of the two programs when they take the pitch at Belson Stadium.
Saturday's contest will come 15 years to the day since their last meeting, a 4-0 win for the Johnnies on Sept. 4, 2006. Senior captain Georgios Spanos scored two goals, including the game winner.
St. John's has won five straight games against Marist dating back to 1993. The Red Foxes' last win against St. John's came in 1992, as Marist handed the then-Redmen one of their three losses that season, a campaign that saw St. John's win its first BIG EAST Regular Season Championship and finish 17-3-2.
Fordham enters the weekend looking for its first win of the campaign. The Rams, who were undefeated heading into this spring's NCAA Tournament and ranked 23rd in the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll, lost 3-0 at Providence in their season opener before falling to Georgetown, 4-0, at Shaw Field.
Fordham, which is coached by former St. John's standout and 1996 national champion Carlo Acquista, was picked to repeat as Atlantic 10 champions by a vote of the league's coaches. Two Rams, Luke McNamara and Matt Sloan, were named to the preseason all-conference team. Sloan, the Most Outstanding Player of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, scored a team-high four goals last spring while McNamara anchored a backline that helped turn in a 0.65 goals against average.
St. John's and Fordham will meet for the 18th time in a series that dates back to 1980. Entering Monday's match, the Rams and the Red Storm have each won eight games against the other with a lone tie coming in 1993.
Fordham dominated the series early on, winning six of its first seven games against St. John's between 1980 and 1987. Since Dr. Dave Masur took over the Red Storm program in 1991, the series has tilted in favor of St. John's, as the Johnnies own a 5-1-1 record against Fordham over that span. The Rams' lone win during that time came in their last meeting, a 1-0 win at Belson Stadium on Sept. 1, 2017.
