The Red Storm welcomes the Rams in the first home match of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team will host Rhode Island in its home opener on Tuesday, welcoming the Rams for a 4 p.m. showdown inside Taffner Fieldhouse.
The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Live Stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies are currently 2-4 on the season after winning a pair of matches against UAlbany and Colgate and falling to Cornell this past weekend.
In the first game of the weekend against UAlbany on Saturday, the Red Storm captured its first win of the season. After dropping the first set, 27-25, St. John's won each of the next three. The final three set scores were 25-19, 25-14, and 25-14, respectively, all in the favor of the Red Storm.
St. John's then faced off against Cornell in its second match of the day. The Red Storm was able to capture the first set, 28-26, but failed to grab any of the remaining three, as the Big Red took sets two, three, and four by scores of 27-25, 25-23 and 25-19, respectively. In the loss, Eleonora Tosi tallied a career-high 21 kills, shattering her previous high-water mark of seven set against Stony Brook on Feb, 14, 2021.
The Red Storm ended the weekend with a victory over Colgate. St. John's took the first frame, 25-18, before the Raiders took the second set, 25-18. The Johnnies then closed the match with set victories of 25-11 and 25-16.
Rachele Rastelli earned a BIG EAST Honor Roll nod after tallying 55 kills on the weekend. One of those kills marked the 1,000th of her career, as Rastelli became just the 12th Johnnie in program history to achieve this milestone.
After opening the season with back-to-back wins, Rhode Island has lost each of its last five entering Tuesday's contest. This past weekend, the Rams faced stiff competition at the Red Raider Class, losing in three sets to No. 6 Ohio State, Texas State and Texas Tech in Lubbock.
The Rams return just one player who saw action in all Rhody's sets last season, Ella Ratzloff. The libero led the team in digs (258) and digs per set (4.78) while also tallying 52 assists and 13 service aces.
This will be the second meeting all-time between the Johnnies and Rams, as the Red Storm claimed a 3-1 victory in Kingston on March 3.
