Three Red Storm players post double figures during loss to Golden Eagles
QUEENS, N.Y (Jan. 30, 2022) – The St. John's women's basketball team fell to BIG EAST foe Marquette, 70-65, at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday.
As a team, the Red Storm (6-14, 2-8 BIG EAST) shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from beyond the arc. St. John's outscored the Golden Eagles (15-5, 8-3 BIG EAST) in the paint 38-10 and the Johnnies bench held the 10-4 edge over Marquette.
Leilani Correa led the Red Storm in scoring as the junior posted 17 points and added five rebounds. Kadaja Bailey tallied 15 points while Unique Drake logged 12 during the loss. Rayven Peeples recorded 11 rebounds, her seventh time pulling down double-digit boards this season.
The Johnnies began the contest shooting 43.8 percent overall but just 1-for-4 from three. The team jumped out to an 11-6 lead following a Bailey bucket with 5:16 to play in the period. Despite the advantage, a 6-0 run by the Golden Eagles put the Red Storm behind by three with 1:33 to go in the frame. After tying the game at 16 apiece, Marquette ended the quarter on a 4-0 run, putting the Johnnies behind 20-16 after the opening 10 minutes.
St. John's continued to battle in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three. On defense, the Danielle Cosgrove and Danielle Patterson recorded blocks for the Johnnies, but Marquette had the hot hand, shooting 46.7 from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. St. John's nailed five of its last six shots in the period but could not chip away at the Golden Eagle lead, and at the half, the Red Storm trailed Marquette 36-32.
Coming out of the locker room, the Johnnies offense suffered, making just five shots from the floor. However, the St. John's defense kept the team in the game, holding Marquette to just 11 points for the period. An 8-0 run for the Red Storm with 5:05 remaining tied the game at 40, and at the buzzer, St John's trailed 47-46 with 10 minutes left to play.
Patterson got the offense started, scoring with 9:26 to play to give the Johnnies the 48-47 edge early in the quarter. A back-and-forth battle followed with neither team leading by more than a pair, and at the media timeout, the Johnnies trailed 53-52 with 6:21 remaining in the game. Battling point-for-point, Cosgrove nailed a 3-pointer with 1:37 to play to give the Red Storm a one-point edge, but it was the final lead the Red Storm held in the contest. Despite shooting 44.4 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc during the final frame, St. John's fell 70-65.
