St. John's Unable to Stop No. 19 Marquette

Red Storm snaps its four match winning streak
MILWAUKEE (Oct. 22, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team was unable to find its rhythm, and fell in straight sets to No. 19 Marquette on Saturday evening in the Al McGuire Center.
The Red Storm (15-7, 7-3 BIG EAST) were swept for the second time this season by the Golden Eagles (18-2, 9-1).
Rachele Rastelli notched a team-high 15 kills. Giorgia Walther added 10.
Bree Martin tallied team-bests with 11 digs and two aces.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the team with 26 assists. Freshman Erin Jones added nine helpers and six digs.
Marquette's Carsen Murray registered nine blocks, the most by a BIG EAST player in a three-set match this season.
St. John's struggled to hit the ball away from the Marquette block early in the first set and trailed 7-2. The Red Storm went on a 4-0 spurt to cut the deficit to one. Marquette was able to stop the rally and took its largest lead of the frame, 17-11. St. John's was able to mount a comeback and tied the match at 21 after a kill by Giorgia Walther. The two teams traded points, before Marquette strung together two points to take the set, 25-23. Walther led all individuals in the set with 6 kills.
The Red Storm were unable to avenge its first set loss in the second frame. Marquette held the lead the entirety of the stanza. The Johnnies used a 4-0 streak to cut the deficit to 10-8. St. John's was unable to string together more than a pair for the remainder of the set and took the loss, 25-16.
The point-for-point third frame featured 11 ties and four lead changes with neither team leading by more than two until the last five points of the match. St. John's showed it wasn't giving up easy in the third set by establishing early control. The Red Storm led 20-19 hoping to force a fourth frame. However, the Golden Eagles responded with six straight points to assert its dominance at the end of the stanza, and win the match in straight sets. Rastelli led all players with eight of her team-leading 15 kills in the final frame.
St. John's will return home for two matches next weekend, opening with Xavier on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies will close the weekend with a match against No. 18 Creighton at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN3.
