St. John’s Takes on Syracuse in 2022 Empire Classic Championship

Red Storm men’s basketball team advanced with a semifinal win over Temple; Tuesday’s title game with the Orange is scheduled for 9 p.m. inside Barclays Center
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team takes aim at the 2022 Empire Classic title on Tuesday at Barclays Center. The Johnnies carry an unblemished 5-0 record into its championship bout against Syracuse (3-1) after taking down Temple, 78-72, in Monday's semifinal.
The 92nd all-time meeting between the former BIG EAST rivals is now scheduled for 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Dave O'Brien and Jon Crispin will call the national telecast live from Brooklyn.
An audio broadcast on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network featuring John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 383 and channel 973 on the SiriusXM App.
St. John's (5-0) is off to its best start since the 2018-19 campaign when the Red Storm began the year with 12 straight victories. That season, the Johnnies took home the Legends Classic title at Barclays Center, as Shamorie Ponds scored a tournament-record 67 points across two wins over Cal and VCU.
On Tuesday, the Red Storm will rekindle its rivalry with Syracuse for the first time since St. John's rolled to a 33-point victory over the Orange at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 21, 2016. Ponds scored a game-high 21 points while Bashir Ahmed added 20 in the triumph. The Red Storm is riding a three-game win streak in its series with Syracuse with each of these victories coming by double-digit margins.

Joel Soriano registered his fourth double-double in five games this season, finishing with 15 points and 12 boards. Andre Curbelo added 13 points, four assists, three steals and one block, while backcourt mate Posh Alexander registered six points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals in the contest.
Syracuse earned a 74-71 overtime victory in its Empire Classic semifinal contest with Richmond on Monday. Joe Girard III scored a career-high 31 points, shooting 12-of-24 from the field with four 3-pointers to lead the Orange. A native of Glens Falls, N.Y., Girard is averaging a team-high 21.3 points per game this season. Freshman guard Judah Mintz is the Orange's second-leading scorer with 17.5 points per game to go with a team-high 3.5 assists per contest.
