Wildermuth enters first spring season with the Red Storm
QUEENS, N.Y. (NOV. 27, 2022) – In his first spring season with the St. John's men's golf team, head coach Phil Wildermuth released the 2023 spring slate.
"Our strength of schedule improves greatly this spring. We are very excited. It's all being prepared come late April for the Big East Championship", said coach Wildermuth about the spring season.
The Red Storm will open its 2023 spring campaign participating in the BIG EAST Match Play in West Palm Beach, Fla. The two day outing opens on Monday, February 6th, and closes the following day. The squad finished in fourth last spring.
The Johnnies will take 19 days between its next match, a break which includes the 2023 St. John's spring break. February 26th, St. John's will open the three day Loyola Intercollegiate Invitational. It will be held in Goodyear, Ari. at the Palm Valley Country Club. This will be the Johnnies first appearance in this event since 2017 where the squad finished 15th of 19 teams.
Once returning from Arizona, there will be a two week break in competition before embarking to Southern Pines, N.C, to partake in the Ross Intercollegiate, for the third consecutive season. In 2021, the Johnnies seventh place finish was improved on from an 11th place finish the season prior.
After another two week break, the Johnnies will begin a three-week grind beginning with its debut in the Southern Invitational April 3rd and 4th in Palm Beach Fla. The Invitational will be played at The Falls Club.
The following week, the team will travel to Glenside, Penn. for the Wildcat Invitational, another normal occurrence in the St. John's schedule. For the fourth consecutive season the Red Storm will participate in the event played at the LuLu Club. In last spring's competition, current senior, Gage Wolfle finished a season best eighth place in the Invitational posting a 145 overall.
Closing out the third consecutive week of play, it's the St. John's debut at the Mountaineer Invitational. For the first time of the program, the squad will play at Pete Dye Golf Club in the two day event hosted by West Virginia University.
Just 10 days later, the team will conclude its scheduled season with the BIG EAST Championship. The three round event will take place for the tenth time in South Carolina, and the first time at Riverton Pointe Golf Club. After recording its best finish since 2016 in last season's Championship, the Red Storm hope to improve on its sixth place finish.
After one of the best Fall seasons in recent history, the Johnnies are hoping to have turned a new page. The team took home the UConn Invitational at Great Horse title and stellar sophomore Peicheng Chen earned medalist honors at The MacDonald Cup. Winning its last three events of the fall season, the Red Storm hope to add a successful spring season to Wildermuth's first season with the Red Storm.
