Garziano tallied her fourth goal of the year in the first half

BOYDS, Md. (Nov. 3, 2022)- The St. John's women's soccer team saw its 2022 season draw to a close with a 3-1 loss to the Xavier Musketeers in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championship at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Thursday evening.

Jessica Garziano scored her fourth goal of the campaign, tying her for the team lead with Nicole Gordon. The senior midfielder finished 2022 with the squad-high in individual points with 13.

Gordon led the way in shots with two attempts in 75 minutes of game action. Brooke Boyd, Melina Couzis and Jailene DeJesus each registered a shot on Thursday.

After the Musketeers controlled possession in the opening 20 minutes, the Red Storm was awarded a free kick in the attacking third in the 23^rd minute. Garziano stepped up and drilled a ground ball that sneaked through the traffic and found its way to the bottom right corner of the net to give the Johnnies an early 1-0 advantage.

The two teams continued to trade shot attempts in the remainder of the opening stanza with Xavier outshooting St. John's, 5-2, in the final 22 minutes of the first half.

The Red Storm defense held steady for the first half-hour of the second half, allowing only one off-target shot from Ella Rogers.

In the 79^th minute, Emma Flick connected her right foot with the ball and buried it in the top corner to give Xavier its first tally of the evening and tie it at one with 11 minutes to go in regulation.

Both teams held firm, and St. John's headed to overtime for the second straight match.

The Musketeers pulled away in the first overtime period, scoring twice courtesy of Molly McLaughlin and Chloe Netzel, respectively, to vault Xavier in front, 3-1.

The Johnnies had several looks at goal in the second overtime period, but they were unable to mount a comeback as the match ended with a 3-1 score in favor of Xavier.
