St. John’s Sweeps Butler for Second Time this Season

Red Storms ends four-match skid
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team swept Butler for the second time this season on Friday night in Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (17-10, 8-6 BIG EAST) are now a game and a half ahead of the Bulldogs (12-13, 6-7).
Lucrezia Lodi tied her career-high for the second straight match with 17 kills. The freshman also added six digs.
Giorgia Walther notched her fourth double-double of the season and her second of the week with 10 kills and 13 digs.
Rachele Rastelli was one of three Johnnies with double-digit kills registering 15 and added five blocks.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the team with 43 assists.
St. John's hit an outstanding .353 in the match opposed to Butler's .224. The Red Storm out-dug the Bulldogs 38-31.
The Red Storm dominated the first set, never allowing the Bulldogs to take the lead. St. John's jumped out early, 7-3 and never looked back. The Johnnies never allowed Butler to get within two points, and only allowed the Bulldogs to score three consecutive points once. Lodi led all individuals with eight kills. Lodi punctuated the set with a dominating kill giving the Johnnies the win, 25-20.
The back-and-forth second frame featured 11 ties between the two teams. In an attempt to avenge its first set loss, Butler took an early 10-9 lead. The Johnnies responded with a 4-1 burst to establish control of the stanza for a few points before the Bulldogs tied the frame at 14. The set was tied for the final time at 15, before the Red Storm erupted on a 6-0 run. Once again a kill by Lodi ended the set, this time 25-22 in favor of the Johnnies. St. John's hit a remarkable .389 in the second set.
In the third stanza the Red Storm dominated once again. St. John's never allowed the Bulldogs to take a lead in two of the three sets. The two teams were trading points early on in the frame until the Johnnies pulled away on a 6-2 run. The Red Storm used an 8-1 run to cruise to a 25-17 third and final set victory. Rastelli registered a team-high eight kills while hitting .727.
St. John's hits the road for its last regular season road trip, opening with No.15 Creighton on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Red Storm will travel to Xavier for a Sunday matinee match at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on BEDN on FloSports.
