Red Storm ranked for the first time since Dec. 14, 2015
QUEENS, N.Y.- For the first time in over seven years, the St. John's women's basketball team is ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, checking in at No. 25 in the rankings that were released on Monday.
The Red Storm breaks into the national poll on the heels of an undefeated season with an 11-0 record after moving past Providence, 63-55, on Sunday. The perfect start matches a program record set during the 2004-05 campaign.
The Johnnies are one of 10 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division I and the only unbeaten squad in the BIG EAST. Yesterday's win over the Friars pushed the Johnnies to 3-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign.
St. John's success so far this year can be attributed to a stout defense that is allowing opponents to score 54.0 points per game, which ranks 22nd nationally. In eight of its 11 victories, opponents have shot less than 40 percent from the field.
The ranking marks the 38th time in the program's history it has been ranked in the Associated Press poll. The last came on Dec. 14, 2015, when St. John's also claimed the no. 25 slot.
The nationally-ranked Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday at Carnesecca Arena to face Wagner at 2 p.m. to close out non-conference play.
