Red Storm downed Providence on Sunday to reach 11-0 and tie best start in program history
QUEENS, N.Y.- After defeating Providence on Sunday to move to 11-0 and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, the St. John's women's basketball team was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Team of the Week, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The Red Storm topped the Friars, 63-55, on Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca arena to tie the 2004-05 team for the best start in the program's 48-year history. For their efforts, the Johnnies checked in at No. 25 in the Associated Press national poll, earning a spot in the rankings for the first time since 2015 and the 38th time in program history.
St. John's is one of 10 unbeaten teams in the country and the only undefeated squad remaining in the BIG EAST. Sunday's win vaulted the Red Storm to a 3-0 start in league competition, its best since the 2014-15 season.
The Johnnies have been stifling on defense, allowing 54.0 points a game to their opponents to lead the conference. The Red Storm ranks second in the league in field-goal percentage defense and three-point percentage defense, allowing opponents to 35.8 and 26.2 percent, respectively. Opponents have shot 40 percent or less from the floor in eight of the 11 victories this season.
Nationally-ranked St. John's will close out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday when it welcomes in the Wagner Seahawks to Carnesecca Arena for a 2 p.m. matchup. The game will be streamed on FloSports with Matt Levine and Joe Vasile on the call from Queens.
