St. John’s Falls to Boston College in Second Round of NIVC

Red Storm ends its 12th 20-win season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (Dec. 3, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Boston College in the second round of the NIVC in the Margot Connell Recreation Center.
With the loss, the Red Storm end its season with a final record of 20-14, the 12th 20 win season in program history. Boston College (20-13) advances to the quarterfinals of the NIVC to host Xavier.
Rachele Rastelli notched a team-high 12 kills in her final match as a Johnnie, six short of tying the program's total kills record.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied a match-high 22 kills, Erin Jones added six.
In the first set, the Red Storm broke out to an early 6-3 lead. The Eagles chipped away to tie the frame at eight. After a series of back-and-forth points and nine ties, the stanza was tied at 16 apiece. Boston College used a 5-0 burst to silence the Johnnies and finished the frame on a 3-0 run to win the first stanza, 25-18.
After a hot start to the second set, the Red Storm fell victim to the rallying Eagles. The Red Storm led 10-3, but a 6-1 BC run, tightened the score at 11-9 in favor of the Red Storm. With Johnnies leading 14-12, Boston College stormed into the lead on five consecutive points. Back-to-back Red Storm points cut the deficit to 22-21, but the Eagles triumphed, 25-22.
The back-and-forth third frame, ended the Red Storm's postseason hopes. In a set that featured six ties and five lead changes, the Red Storm were never able to execute a run to break out into the lead. Boston College led 14-9, and the Johnnies responded to cut the deficit to one, but were never able to tie the stanza up. Boston College closed the match on a 6-2 spurt to close the book on the Johnnies 12th 20-win season.
Although the season has ended, and five players have donned the Red Storm jersey for the last time, the accomplishments of this team should not go unnoticed. The team won three pre-conference tournaments including its sixth-straight Jack Kaiser Classic. After earning its fourth conference tournament bid in the last five seasons, the team earned its second NIVC Bid. In the NIVC, the team won its first match in program history.
