Annual event generated more than $300,000 for the Red Storm men’s basketball program
QUEENS, N.Y. – Supporters of the Red Storm joined together at The Plaza for the annual "An Evening with St. John's Basketball" dinner, raising funds and generating excitement for the St. John's men's basketball program on Thursday night.
Following a cocktail reception, St. John's University President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. began the formal portion of the evening with a prayer and opening remarks before welcoming men's basketball head coach Mike Anderson to the stage.
"I'm honored to be in the presence of people who support this program year after year after year," said Anderson. "We have something really special in this room and we are excited to carry this legacy forward."
Director of Athletics Mike Cragg also expressed his appreciation for supporters of St. John's Athletics and for their contributions to the men's basketball program.
"Tonight is what St. John's is all about," said Cragg. "It's about family and it's about thankfulness. Put that together with the mission of the school and what you have is something special."
The evening's special guest, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Bernard King, shared memorable stories from his days with the University of Tennessee, including his matchup against the Johnnies in 1975, as well as his 14 professional seasons in the NBA. He most notably talked about battling back from a knee injury, which sidelined him for two years, and facing current men's basketball staff member Paul Pressey and the Milwaukee Bucks in his first game back.
King was then joined on stage by Anderson and Pressey for a sitdown conversation moderated by FOX Sports and St. John's Basketball analyst Vin Parise, as the trio shared stories and discussed a range of topics.
St. John's Athletics also recognized its inaugural Supporter of the Year award recipients, Patrick L. Muchow '87CBA, '92MBA and Elizabeth A. Muchow '87 CBA, for their outstanding contributions to the University and the Red Storm men's basketball program.
In total, the event raised more than $300,000 for St. John's Basketball.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday at Carnesecca Arena when the Red Storm plays host to New Hampshire at 6 p.m.
