Red Storm players received commemorative rings to recognize historic season
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 18, 2022) – The St. John's women's soccer program celebrated its accomplishments from the 2021 season on Friday afternoon as the team received commemorative rings to recognize the feats of the historic campaign.
"I think it's important that we not only enjoy the celebration, but also to capture some of the reasons why it all happened," said Head Coach Ian Stone. "The contribution of players putting the interest of the team over the interest of themselves is what made our team successful this past season."
The Red Storm women's soccer team put together an historic run in 2021 that was capped by an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. The Johnnies concluded their unforgettable year with an overall record of 13-7-3 and a 6-3-1 mark in BIG EAST action. Earning its 14th conference tournament berth, St. John's made an appearance in the 2021 BIG EAST Championship game for the first time since winning it all in 1994.
"There were 342 teams in Division I at the start of the season, and we were one of the 16 teams still playing at the end of that season," added Stone. "That's quite an accomplishment."
The Red Storm's success in 2021 was anchored by Zsani Kajan. The two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year found the back of the net a conference-best 17 times last season to lead the squad and rank inside the top-five on the national level. Kajan capped off her impressive career with the Johnnies by becoming the second ever Red Storm player to hear her name called during the NWSL Draft when she was selected by OL Reign in the first round with the 8th overall pick.
