The Hofstra transfer joins the Red Storm squad for 2022-23
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Women's Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella announced the addition of Hofstra graduate transfer JaKayla Brown to the 2022-23 roster.
"We're thrilled to add JaKayla to our program," said Tartamella. "She gives us another experienced veteran player who has had a tremendous amount of success in the CAA. JaKayla's ability to score in different ways and defend multiple positions will help us on both ends of the floor. We can't wait to welcome her and her family to St. John's."
Brown played in just eight games during the 2021-22 season for the Pride, starting each contest. She averaged 13.0 points and 3.8 rebounds over the non-conference stretch for Hofstra.
The LaPlata, Md., native entered her final season with the Pride after earning All Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Second Team and all-CAA Second Team honors as a junior. Brown started and appeared in 20 games, leading Hofstra with 16.1 points per outing. In conference action alone, the guard poured on 17.3 points per game.
Brown finished 17 games with double-figure scoring and scored 20 or more points on five separate occasions. She led the Pride in scoring in 13 games, including both contests during the CAA Tournament. During Hofstra's quarterfinal matchup against Towson, Brown erupted for a career-best 28 points during the victory. She tied her career-best with eight rebounds against Stony Brook.
As a sophomore, Brown appeared in 24 games, making 12 starts. She averaged 6.0 points and 2.7 rebounds during the 2019-20 campaign. The guard tallied a season-best eight rebounds at UNC Wilmington and tallied a season-high 13 points against Northeastern.
Making an immediate impact, Brown appeared in 27 games as a freshman with nine starts for the Pride. The guard shot 38.3 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. During the CAA tournament quarterfinals that season, Brown tallied a career-high 17 points and pulled down six boards as the team knocked off top-seeded James Madison.
Coming out of high school, Brown was named a McDonald's All-American nominee following her senior season. The St. Mary's Ryken graduate was the second leading scorer in WCAC and ranked in the top 10 for scoring in the Washington All-Met area as a junior. She was elected to the All-St. Mary's County first team as a junior and a senior. Brown finished her high school career with 1,485 points.
A star on the court and in the classroom, Brown was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team as a junior and served as a member of the Hofstra Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
