Ava Collins Called Up for 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup

New Zealand native represents country at event in Costa Rica
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Women's Soccer standout Ava Collins earned on a spot on the New Zealand U-20 squad for the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, taking place in Costa Rica next month.
The 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will begin on Aug. 10 with group play. New Zealand is slated to face Mexico, Colombia and Germany from Aug. 10-16. Each of the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages, which will begin Aug. 18 and run through the championship match on Aug. 28.
Last season, Collins played an integral role in the Johnnies attack. The forward appeared in 20 matches for the Red Storm, making 15 starts. She recorded four goals on the year, including the game-winner against Brown in extra-time during the Johnnies' opening match of the NCAA Tournament.
As a freshman, the midfielder played in all 12 matches, starting in 11. Collins landed a spot on the All-BIG EAST Freshman team and was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team. She checked in at no. 32 on the TopDrawerSoccer Postseason top-100 freshmen list and no. 55 on the midseason's top-100 freshmen list. The Auckland, New Zealand, native paced the St. John's squad in assists, as she posted five helpers, which tied for third in the conference.
Collins will join the 20 other athletes on the Junior Football Ferns roster. She is one of four collegiate players to make the squad. She has previously represented New Zealand at three separate events during the collegiate offseason. She joined the Football Ferns for the SheBeleives Cup and during the April FIFA window. Collins was also on the Junior Football Ferns U-20 squad for their matches Auckland, New Zealand in June.
The Red Storm will return the pitch at Belson Stadium on Aug. 18, when the Johnnies welcome Saint Joseph's for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
