QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team has released its non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2022-23 campaign.
Tip-off times and TV destinations for all non-conference games will be released at a later date.
The Red Storm will kick off the 2022-23 season, the 116th in its storied history, on Monday, Nov. 7, when it hosts Merrimack at Carnesecca Arena. The home opener will mark the first-ever meeting between the Red Storm and the Warriors.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12, when the Johnnies welcome Lafayette to Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm and the Leopards will square off for the 11th time overall and the first since 1997. St. John's is 6-4 all-time against Lafayette. The Johnnies lost four straight in the series from 1917-21, but are 6-0 since 1953.
After playing host to Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, Nov. 15, the Johnnies will take on Nebraska in the Gavitt Tipoff Games on Nov. 17. The contest will mark the second time that the Red Storm and Cornhuskers will meet in Queens, as St. John's routed Nebraska, 79-56, at Carnesecca Arena during the 2017 edition of the early-season series between the BIG EAST and Big Ten. The Red Storm is 3-0 all-time against CCSU, including a 30-point win in Anderson's second game as the Johnnies' head coach in 2019.
Following four games in Queens to start the season, St. John's will venture to Brooklyn for the 2022 Empire Classic on Nov. 21 and 22 at Barclays Center. St. John's will be joined in the four-team field by a trio of historically successful programs in Richmond, Temple and former BIG EAST foe Syracuse. Matchups for the tournament will announced at a later date.
St. John's will then return home for a pair of games at Carnesecca Arena, welcoming Niagara on Saturday, Nov. 26, before hosting LIU on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Red Storm will meet Niagara, a fellow Vincentian institution, for the 101st time in a series that the Johnnies currently lead 73-27. The Purple Eagles are the fifth most frequently played opponent in St. John's history. The Red Storm and LIU also have a lenghty history dating back to 1931.
The Red Storm will kick off December on the road, traveling to Hilton Coliseum for a contest against Iowa State in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle on Sunday, Dec. 4. The Johnnies won the only previous meeting against the Cyclones, a 71-47 win at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 21, 1948.
St. John's is 1-1 all-time in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle, defeating West Virginia at MSG in 2019 before falling to eventual national champion Kansas last season. The Red Storm's 2020 game against Texas Tech in Lubbock was canceled due to COVID concerns.
St. John's will play its final Carnesecca Arena non-conference game on Dec. 10 when it hosts New Hampshire. The Red Storm and the Wildcats have met on one occasion, a 74-61 St. John's win on Nov. 12, 2019, in Queens.
The Johnnies will travel to The Sunshine State for their non-conference finale, taking on Florida State in the AutoNation Orange Bowl Basketball Classic on Dec. 17. That contest, which will mark the first-ever meeting between the Red Storm and the Seminoles, will be held at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise.
