Jessica Garziano Selected to BIG EAST Preseason Team

Red Storm picked fifth in preseason poll
QUEENS, N.Y. – For a second-straight year, Jessica Garziano was named to the BIG EAST Preseason Team, the league announced on Thursday.
The award for Garziano marks the 11th-straight time a St. John's player was bestowed the preseason honor, dating back to 2012 when current Red Storm Associate Head Coach Amy Marron earned the accolade prior to her junior season.
Garziano led the Johnnie squad in assists during the 2021 season as the midfielder dished out 10 helpers on the year, with five coming in league play. The junior scored her lone goal of the season during St. John's season opener against NJIT on Aug. 19. During the Red Storm's pivotal postseason match with Samford, the junior converted her penalty shot, helping send the Johnnies to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 for the first time in program history.
As a junior, she was tabbed as a United Soccer Coaches East Region Second Team Selection and an All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree. The Melville, N.Y., native earned All-BIG EAST First Team and United Soccer Coaches East Region First Team recognition as a sophomore when she led the Red Storm in scoring, finding the back of the net a team-high seven times.
The Preseason All-BIG EAST team was announced in conjunction with the annual preseason coaches' poll, which saw reigning BIG EAST Tournament champions Georgetown selected as the favorite (98). Regular season champions Xavier finished closely behind in second (91) followed by Butler (83). Providence (69) and St. John's (59) rounding out the top five teams in the league. Connecticut (57) and Creighton (46) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, while Marquette (42) came in eighth. Closing out the poll were DePaul (31) Villanova (22) and Seton Hall (10).
The St. John's women's soccer team will begin its 2022 season on Aug. 18 when the squad welcomes Saint Joseph's to Belson Stadium for a 7 p.m. match up.
