SANTO DOMINGO – Facing its final and toughest test of the team's foreign tour, St. John's fell to the Dominican Republic Senior National Team, 93-84, on Monday at Palacio de los Deportes Travieso Soto.
Chris Duarte, a former All-American at Oregon and the no. 13 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, led the DR squad with 29 points and sealed the contest with a personal 10-2 run in the fourth quarter. Duarte was recently named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team after averaging 13.1 points per game in 55 appearances with the Indiana Pacers.
For the third time in as many opportunities on the team's foreign tour, Joel Soriano posted a double-double. The 6-foot-11 center with extensive experience playing internationally for Dominican youth national teams tallied 22 points and 16 rebounds. The Yonkers product averaged 19.7 points and 13.7 rebounds over the foreign tour's three games, including 22.5 points and 15.5 rebounds against the two Dominican national teams.
Also a Dominican international standout, David Jones, put forth a solid effort in the loss, as the Santo Domingo native scored 14 points and connected on three triples.
Posh Alexander enjoyed another banner day from beyond the arc, sinking three of his six long-range tries and finishing with 13 points.
Freshmen AJ Storr and Kolby King chipped in eight points apiece while Rafael Pinzon added seven.
St. John's hung tough with the seasoned international squad the whole night. Ahead 29-28 near the midway point of the second quarter following a King layup, the Red Storm saw the home side regain its advantage and take a five-point edge, 43-38, into the locker room.
Jones banked in a triple on the second half's first possession to make it a two-point game, but the National Team slowly built its lead back to double digits, 68-58, after 30 minutes of action.
After falling behind by as many as 13, the Red Storm refused to go quietly, as Alexander capped a 7-0 run with a 3-ball to pull within three, 75-72, with 6:15 remaining in the contest. Over the next 90 seconds, Duarte responded by draining three straight triples, one of which resulted in a four-point play, to quickly balloon the DR lead back to 11.
St. John's clawed back within six in the closing minutes, but the Red Storm proved unable to fully close the gap.
The Red Storm, which won its first two games of the foreign tour, will open the 2022-23 season on Nov. 7 against Merrimack at Carnesecca Arena.
