Red Storm to play in five tournaments including The Doc Gimmler
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2022) – St. John's Men's Golf Head Coach Phil Wildermuth announced the team's fall slate on Thursday. The Red Storm will compete in five fall tournaments over the course of two months.
The Johnnies will open the season at home as the team hosts The Doc Gimmler from Sept. 10-11. Squads will play Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The annual event was renamed from The McLaughlin to The Doc Gimmler in 2013 to honor former Red Storm golf coach Jack "Doc" Gimmler. Gimmler came to St. John's in 1945 and helped lead the baseball team to the school's first College World Series in 1949. After graduating, Gimmler went on to become the head athletic trainer for St. John's before taking over as the head coach of the men's golf team and Associate Director of Athletics.
"I'm looking forward to starting our season with the Doc Gimmler," Wildermuth said. "I've heard so many great stories about Doc, and I think it's proper for us to begin our season with an event named after our previous St John's coach who was a great role model to so many of our former players."
The squad will follow the tournament with the MacDonald Cup at Yale on Sept. 24-25. The Johnnies participated in the event at The Yale Golf Course in 2021 and placed fourth. Tyler Gerbavsits led the way for the Red Storm, shooting a three-round 217 to finish in a tie for 14th.
The Johnnies will continue action with the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse from Oct. 2-4. The team finished 11th at the event last year with Peicheng Chen leading the way when he signed off on three-round 75-72-75-222 to tie for 15th place.
The Red Storm will head to the Lehigh Invitational for the first time since 2019 on Oct. 21-22. That season, the team came in eighth place at the event held at Saucon Valley Country Club. Jack Simon paced the squad as a sophomore, finishing ninth in the standings.
The Johnnies will have a quick turnaround for their fall finale as the team heads to the Nassau Invitational. The tournament hosted by LIU will commence Oct. 24-25 at Nassau Country Club.
The Red Storm returns eight golfers from last year's squad. The 2021-22 season marks the first under Wildermuth as he was named the program's leader in June. Prior to his time in Queens, he served as a head coach at Manhattan College.
