St. John’s Travels to Las Vegas for UNLV Rebel Challenge

Red Storm to take on Miami, Weber State and UNLV
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team will continue its 2022 campaign in Las Vegas on Friday afternoon when it begins play at the UNLV Rebel Challenge.
The Red Storm will start the tournament against RV Miami at 2 p.m. at Cox Pavilion. The Johnnies will then take on Weber State the same day at 9 p.m. before closing things out against tournament-host UNLV the following evening at 6 p.m. The match against UNLV will be streamed on Mountain West's website, themw.com. Live Stats will be available for all contests on UNLVRebels.com
The 2022 squad started its season going 3-0 on the road to claim the title at the VolleyBucs VolleyPalooza Tournament. The Johnnies took down California Baptist in four sets on Friday to win their opening match before defeating App State in five sets and host Charleston Southern in four sets on Saturday.
Magda Stambrowkska was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after a stellar debut. Over 13 sets, the middle blocker posted a .446 hitting percentage, which ranks first in the BIG EAST among players with more than one appearance. Additionally, her 1.23 blocks per set rank fifth in the league. Rachele Rastelli earned a nod to the conference's weekly honor roll. She led the BIG EAST in points (5.62) and currently ranks 15th nationally with 4.85 kills per set.
After one weekend of play, St. John's ranks first in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.294), assists (14.23/set) and kills (196). Wiktoria Kowalczyk leads the nation in assists per set (12.85) and ranks fourth with 167 total assists.
Rastelli is second in the country with 73.0 points while Giorgia Walther follows right behind her in third with 71.0 points. The duo also rank within the top 50 of kills per set, total kills, points and points per set.
Miami is currently receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches' Poll after a 3-0 weekend at the Hofstra Invitational. The Hurricanes, who went 25-5 last season, were chosen to finish fourth in the ACC preseason poll. The Hurricanes return All-ACC First Team member Savannah Vach. The senior ranked 19th in the country with 10.98 assists per set. The squad also includes All-ACC Second Team member Janice Leao, who finished 11th nationally with 1.36 blocks per set. The senior also posted a .335 hitting percentage, good enough for eighth in the league.
Miami leads the series against the Johnnies, 3-0. The teams last met at Carnesecca Arena on Oct. 26, 2003.
Weber State is coming off a strong 2021 season that saw the Wildcats go 22-10 and advance to the quarterfinals of NIVC. Weber State was selected second in the Big Sky Preseason Poll. This past weekend, the Wildcats went 3-0 at their home tournament, picking up wins against UC Riverside, Southern Utah and San Jose State. The Weber State roster is headlined by All-American and reigning Big Sky MVP Dani Richins. Richins finished last season ranked second in the nation with 71 aces and tallied 405 kills.
The meeting between St. John's and Weber State will be the first in program history.
UNLV swept Valparaiso in the NIVC Championship last season to earn the first postseason title in program history. The Rebels were chosen to finish sixth this season by the Mountain West coaches. The Rebels return eight letterwinners from their championship squad and welcome eight newcomers, including 2020 BIG 12 Setter of the Year Jhenna Gabriel. The Texas transfer led the league with 11.32 assists and helped Texas to a .334 hitting percentage, the third best in the NCAA during the season.
