QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2022) – The St. John's Athletic Department presented its first StormChat Speaker Series of the year, NIL and the Legal Landscape, on Monday. The panel was part of the St. John's UNLIMITED program, a multi-faceted program that focuses on educational opportunities for student-athletes.
The event, in collaboration with the St. John's School of Law, focused on the basics of name, image and likeness (NIL) with a particular focus on the legal aspects.
The panel included three third year law students who were previously student-athletes: Brendan Spagnuolo (Boston College '18), Kiersten Daly (Colgate University '20) and Julia Shea (Fairleigh Dickinson '20). Additionally, the panel featured Millow Lulow, who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from SUNY Purchase where he was a member of the baseball team. He went on to procure his Juris Doctorate from St. John's in 2018.
The four speakers presented information on NIL, including information about the legal case, NCAA vs. Alston, the current legislation and rules surrounding NIL and provided education on exclusivity clauses and intellectual property.
"We were thrilled to collaborate with the St. John's University School of Law, to provide student-athletes education and tools, as they navigate the realm of Name, Image, and Likeness," said Director of Student-Athlete Leadership Allie Sachs. "We look forward to continue teaming up with School of Law in the future."
