Red Storm will host Connecticut on Sunday at 1 p.m.
BOYDS, Md. – The St. John's women's soccer team opened BIG EAST play with a 1-0 loss at No. 23 Georgetown at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Thursday night.
Melina Couzis posted the Johnnies (3-3-3, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) lone shot on goal for the night. The Baldwin Place, N.Y., native's low attempt in the 88th minute was not enough to send the Red Storm past the ranked Hoyas (5-1-3, 1-0-0 BIG EAST). Defensively, Gina Muzi made her eighth-straight start in goal for St. John's. The senior keeper made three saves during her 90-minute outing.
St. John's struggled to get the offense going in the first half as the Hoyas dominated the time of possession. Georgetown outshot the Johnnie squad 7-0 in the opening frame with Nicole Multer, Katherine Turner, Brooke Boyd and Emily Riggins holding down the St. John's backline.
Muzi made three saves in the opening period with the first coming in just the eighth minute of play as the Hoyas tried to get one past a diving keeper. The Delafield, Wis., native made her second stop in the 19th minute when Claire Manning attempted to power one by the outstretched netminder. Maya Fernandez-Powell blasted Georgetown's third shot on target in the frame towards the center of the Johnnie net, but the senior stood in the way of the Hoya attempt.
The Red Storm continued to battle following the halftime break. With each squad looking to get on the board, Georgetown's Emma Davis broke open the match, striking a goal into the top left corner of the Johnnie net to take the 1-0 lead in the 71st minute.
Following the Hoyas' score, St. John's looked to capitalize on its possessions. The best look for the Johnnies came in the final minutes as Couzis tried to slip a low ball by the Georgetown keeper in the 88th minute. Allie Augur made a clutch stop for Georgetown with time winding down, sealing the conference defeat for the Red Storm.
St. John's returns to the Belson Stadium for a conference match with Connecticut on Sunday. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
