St. John’s takes on UConn at 1 p.m. on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team gets set for a match against Connecticut at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
The Red Storm makes its return home following a 20-day stint that saw the Johnnies battle Lehigh, Cornell and No. 23 Georgetown all on the road. The last home match for the team within the friendly confines of Belson Stadium took place on September 5 when the Red Storm downed Central Connecticut State, 3-0. The match also marked the last time the Johnnies posted a goal as St. John's was shutout in all three road games.
In the team's BIG EAST opener, St. John's fell to the ranked Hoyas squad, 1-0. Melina Couzis posted the lone shot on target in the 88th minute as she tried to blow one by the Georgetown keeper. Gina Muzi made three stops during the loss, all in the first half of the conference match. The Hoyas held the 12-1 advantage in shots and the 10-0 edge on corner kicks.
The Red Storm holds a 3-3-3 record overall and a 0-1-0 mark in conference play. The Johnnies have outscored their opponents, 11-9, so far this season, averaging 1.22 goals per game. Ava Collins, Jessica Garziano and Nicole Gordon each tallied a pair of goals to pace the St. John's squad. Garziano also leads the Red Storm with three assists and seven points.
UConn comes to Queens at 5-2-1 this year and 1-0-0 in league play. The Huskies have won three-straight, having topped Creighton, 2-1, to open conference play in their previous outing. Northeastern was the last team to triumph over UConn, having taken down the Huskies, 1-0, in Boston on Sept 4.
Three different players have posted three goals on the year, but Abbey Jones paces the Husky squad with four assists and 10 points for her sophomore campaign. Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree Jaydah Bedoya has started all eight matches for UConn, tallying two goals and one assist so far this year. Kaitlyn Mahoney has seen most of the action in goal for UConn this season. With six starts, the Manorville, N.Y., native has logged a 0.91 goals against average and a .773 save percentage.
Couzis is no stranger to the Husky program, having played four years at UConn before joining the St. John's squad in 2022. The Baldwin Place, N.Y., native last suited up for the Huskies in the spring of 2021, earning First Team All-BIG EAST and Second Team United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors.
UConn leads the all-time series between the programs 18-6-1, but the Johnnies took home the 3-0 win the last time the teams faced off in Storrs, Conn. on Sept. 23, 2021. Brooke Boyd and Isabelle Aviza each recorded a goal along with former St. John's standout Zsani Kajan.
St. Johns will be back in action on Thursday when the team welcomes Seton Hall for a showdown at Belson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
