Isabelle Aviza scores the game-winner for the Johnnies
QUEENS, N.Y. – Behind Isabelle Aviza's game-winning goal, the St. John's women's soccer team triumphed over Connecticut, 1-0, in the team's BIG EAST home opener at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Aviza notched her first goal of the season, as the Medway, Mass., native powered the ball by a diving Adyson Duran in the 14th minute. The tally marked the sixth score of her career with the Red Storm (4-3-3).
Gina Muzi earned the start between the pipes and the senior tallied three saves in the win as she improved to 4-3-2. Duran picked up the loss as she recorded two stops for UConn (5-3-1).
The Red Storm took an early lead when Aviza found the back of the net in the 14th minute. Melina Couzis found the senior at the top of the box and the forward blasted a shot past the diving UConn netminder into the bottom right corner of the net.
Following the goal, the Huskies outshot the Johnnies squad, 4-1. Muzi made a pair of saves in the 18th and 45th minutes respectively, to keep UConn off the board at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Huskies continued to outshoot the Johnnies, 4-1. The best look for the Red Storm in the second half came in the 61st minute as Nicole Gordon looked to slip one into the bottom left corner. However, Duran made a diving stop, thwarting the forward's attempt.
Desperate for an equalizer with time running out, UConn pelted the Johnnie defense with a pair of shots in the 82nd minute. Katherine Turner blocked the Huskies first attempt while Muzi stretched to stop the rebound. The attempts were the final shots of the match, as the Johnnies posted their fourth clean sheet of the year.
St. John's returns to Belson Stadium for a match against Seton Hall on Thursday. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
