Red Storm to raise money for relief services and essential supplies for communities most affected by Hurricane Fiona
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Athletic Director Mike Cragg announced on Friday that the department will raise funds for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic throughout the remainder of the fall.
In an initiative coordinated by the department's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and the Council on Community, Culture & Social Justice (CCCSJ), all St. John's fans can contribute by purchasing tickets to a men's soccer game the rest of the season or a ticket to the men's basketball team's exhibition against Adelphi on October 26. One dollar of every ticket purchased will go to the Hispanic Federation supporting their Hurricane Fiona relief efforts. The Hispanic Federation is a highly regarded Latino nonprofit membership organization. For more information, click here.
Fans can also make additional donations to the effort by contacting Director of Marketing & Promotions Alex Tannous (tannous@stjohns.edu) or by visiting the Athletic Marketing table on game days.
"I'm incredibly proud of the multiple student-athletes and employees who came to me separately about wanting to do something to help the people of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic," said Cragg. "This is deeply personal for many members of the St. John's Athletics community and I applaud their steadfast efforts."
"The devastation levied by Hurricane Fiona has left many residents of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic without viable access to roads, power, and other services," said Ric Carreras from the St. John's men's lacrosse team who also serves as a BIG EAST SAAC representative. "SAAC aims to support those in need in the coming weeks, as they work to repair and restore damage."
This past summer, the St. John's men's basketball team took a nine-day foreign tour to Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros and Punta Cana. Four members of the Red Storm either hail from or have family members in either Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic: Andre Curbelo, David Jones, Rafael Pinzon, and Joel Soriano.
Across the University's 17 varisty sports, numerous student-athletes hail from either Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic while many more trace their lineage to these islands.
