St. John’s Dominates Providence in Three Sets

Red Storm extends winning streak to seven
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team controlled the entirety of its BIG EAST opener against Providence on Friday night, downing the Friars in straight sets at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (10-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) started strong, winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-19, respectively, before a hard-fought third set concluded with a 27-25 victory.
With the loss, the Friars fell to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
Freshman Lucrezia Lodi notched her fourth double-double of the season, posting a team-high 17 digs to go along with 13 kills. Giorgia Walther also tallied 13 kills for the Johnnies.
Rachele Rastelli recorded her 119th career service ace in the third set, moving her into a tie for sixth all-time in St. John's history. The graduate student also finished with nine kills.
The NCAA's leader in assists, Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied a match-high 36 helpers.
St. John's led Providence in kills, 49-30.
In the first set, the Johnnies used an early 7-0 run to take a commanding 14-5 lead on their way to a 25-16 victory. Magda Stambrowska led St. John's with four kills on an .800 hitting percentage in the frame while Eleonora Tosi and Rastelli tallied three blocks apiece.
The Red Storm never trailed in the second set, cruising to a 25-19 victory. Walther recorded nine of her match-high 13 kills in the second stanza. Lodi recorded six kills and nine of her 17 digs in the frame.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle with a thrilling finish. After Providence rallied early to take a 10-9 advantage, neither team led by more than three for the remainder of the set. With the Johnnies trailing 24-23, a kill by Lodi tied the set at 24. A kill by Rastelli and blocks by Lodi and Stambrowska clinched the 27-25 victory for the Red Storm. Lodi registered set-highs five kills and five digs in the decisive stanza.
The Red Storm will conclude its eight-match homestand on Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest against BIG EAST foe Connecticut at Carnesecca Arena.
