Redshirt junior notched the first St. John’s hat trick since 2004
QUEENS, N.Y. – After scoring three goals in just 51 minutes of action on Friday evening against Lehigh, redshirt junior midfield Antek Sienkiel has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced this afternoon by the conference office.
On Friday night at Belson Stadium, Sienkiel netted three of the Red Storm's first four goals in a 5-0 victory over the Mountain Hawks, recording the 21st hat trick in St. John's Men's Soccer history and the first since Andrei Gatsmanov last accomplished the feat in 2004. Miguel Diaz set up each of his first two goals before Sienkiel buried a Wesley Leggett rebound for the third just a few minutes into the second half.
Coming into the match against Lehigh, Sienkiel had recorded two goals and two assists for six points in his first 40 collegiate appearances.
Sienkiel, who was a Second Team All-MAAC selection at Marist last season, also had a strong performance in the Red Storm's 1-0 loss to No. 18 FIU on Monday night in Queens, putting both of his shots on goal. As a team, St. John's outshot the Panthers, 15-3, despite coming out on the wrong end of the result.
Sienkiel becomes the first Johnnie to take home BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors since Tani Oluwaseyi on Oct. 4, 2019. Oluwaseyi, who was taken 17th in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota United FC, went on to win BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year accolades that season.
Sienkiel and the Red Storm will return to action on Tuesday night, renewing a rivalry with No. 21 Indiana in Bloomington. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. on B1G+.
