St. John’s Drops Five-Set Thriller at Fairfield

Lucrezia Lodi notches first career double-double
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Sept. 7, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Fairfield in five sets on Wednesday night at the Fairfield RecPlex.
The Red Storm (3-4) took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. Fairfield (5-2) then grabbed the final three sets, 25-17, 25-15 and 15-11.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Rachele Rastelli notched a game-high 17 kills along with four blocks.
Lucrezia Lodi tallied her first career double-double as the freshman netted 16 kills and 10 digs. Giorgia Walther was the third Johnnie to finish in double-digits as she recorded 10 kills.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk notched 42 helpers while Bree Martin finished with a match-high 16 digs. Iliana Rodriguez added 14 digs.
Down 11-10 in the first set, the Red Storm recorded five straight points, highlighted by consecutive Martin service aces, to grab a 15-11 lead. The score evened three times before a Rastelli kill and an attack error awarded the Johnnies the set, 25-23.
Fairfield was up 12-11 in the second set when the Johnnies jumped out to a 9-2 lead to record a 20-14 lead. Rastelli recorded three kills in the spurt while Lodi netted two. The Stags tried to make a comeback scoring eight of the next 13 points, but an Eleonora Tosi/Rastelli block ended the run at 25-22, Johnnies.
The third set was all Fairfield as they got ahead by four and did not allow St. John's to get within more than two for the remainder of the set.
The Red Storm was within one in the fouth set, 6-5, when the Stags went on a 15-6 run to take a 21-11 advantage. The Johnnies recorded four consecutive points to get within six, 21-15, but Fairfield responded by doing the same to take the fourth set, 25-15.
With St. John's within one, 10-11, in the fifth set, Fairfield recorded four of the next six points to win the set, 15-11, and the match, 3-2.
The Johnnies will host the Eighth Annual Jack Kaiser Classic this weekend, starting on Friday at 10 a.m. against Southeastern Louisiana.
