St. John’s has won each of the last five Kaiser Classic titles
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team will host three non-conference opponents this weekend during the eighth annual Jack Kaiser Classic.
The Red Storm will start the tournament on Friday against Southeastern Louisiana at 10 a.m. inside Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies will then take on Bryant the same day at 8 p.m. before closing things out against Stonehill the following day at 2 p.m. The Red Storm's Friday matches will be available to stream on FloSports, while the game against Stonehill can be found on ESPN3. Live stats will be available for all matches on RedStormSports.com
The Jack Kaiser Classic is named to honor longtime St. John's baseball coach, athletic director and AD emeritus Jack Kaiser, who passed away in May at the age of 95. In 1994, Kaiser oversaw the creation of the St. John's Volleyball program and hired Head Coach Joanne Persico. Over the next 28 years, Kaiser was an avid supporter of the program, its student-athletes and its coaches, all of whom benefitted greatly from his wisdom, generosity and kindness. Prior to Friday night's match, the Red Storm will present Kaiser's family with a plaque to commemorate his dedication to the St. John's Volleyball program.
On Saturday, St. John's student-athletes will be wearing their "Accept No Hate" t-shirts. Accept No Hate is a concept developed by the St. John's Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to help advance the University's commitment to anti-racism, social justice and equality. The volleyball program will wear their "accept no hate" shirts in conjunction with other Division I programs across the country who are wearing black in solidarity. The initiative was created by a group of Division I coaches and publicized through the American Volleyball Coaches Association. St. John's encourages fans to wear their "Accept No Hate" shirts.
St. John's has won each of the last five Kaiser Classic titles. Last year, Rachele Rastelli was named tournament MVP after registering 65 kills on the weekend and averaging 5.0 kills per set over three contests. The senior tallied 31 kills against Boston College. Additionally, Rastelli is poised to move into third place on the program's all-time kills list this weekend. She currently has 1,520 career kills while Olga Roudovski sits in third place with 1,541 kills. Giorgia Walther was also named to the All-Tournament team after she notched 40 kills across three matches.
The Red Storm fell to reigning MAAC Champions Fairfield on Wednesday night in five sets. St. John's took the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. The Stags then grabbed the final three sets, 25-17, 25-15 and 15-11. Rastelli notched a game-high 17 kills along with four blocks while Lucrezia Lodi tallied her first career double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs.
Louisiana finished last season with a 9-18 overall record and a 7-7 mark in conference play. The Lions were selected to finish third in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll. The Lions have won six of their first seven matches this season, most recently taking down Tennessee State in four sets. The Lions return junior Kailin Newsome and sophomore Cicily Hidalgo. Both student-athletes took home Southland Freshman of the Year honors during their debut seasons. Hidalgo leads the squad with 84 kills while Newsome follows with 68. Newsome has also recorded eight service aces on the season.
This will be the first meeting between the Red Storm and the Lions.
Bryant enters the Kaiser Classic with a 5-3 record. Last season, the Bulldogs advanced to the NEC Championship before falling to Sacred Heart. Most recently, Bryant took down Brown in a five-set thriller on Tuesday. The Bulldogs return All-NEC Second Team member Caroline Kennedy, who leads the squad with 60 kills across 26 sets. Rounding out the lineup is Riley James who was named to the All-NEC First Team following her junior season. The outside hitter is averaging 1.4 kills per set and 2.03 digs per set.
St. John's leads the all-time series against Bryant with a perfect 4-0 mark. All four matches have been three-set sweeps.
Stonehill is in its debut season as a Division I program and comes to Queens with an 0-5 record. The Skyhawks will look to Jentry Allen, who was named an NEC Prime Performer of the Week on Aug. 30. Allen leads the squad with 2.86 kills per set and is second on the team with 25 digs.
