St. John’s to Host Pace in Final Exhibition Contest on Sunday

Red Storm men’s basketball team tips-off with Pace at 3:30 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will play its final exhibition of the preseason on Sunday when the Red Storm welcomes Pace to Carnesecca Arena for a 3:30 p.m. tip in Queens.

St. John's is coming off a thrilling 89-78 double-overtime victory against Rutgers in a charity exhibition game on Saturday with proceeds benefiting the Dick Vitale Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation. Graduate student Nahiem Alleyne led all Johnnies with 19 points and four 3-pointers, including a buzzer-beating triple to force double-overtime.
Glenn Taylor Jr., who was recently named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's Preseason Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Watch List, scored seven of the first nine points in the second overtime. The junior transfer from Oregon State finished with 13 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals.
Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team selection Joel Soriano recorded a double-double against the Scarlet Knights, as the Yonkers native finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
The Red Storm enters its first season under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, who will embark on his 36th year at the helm of an NCAA Division I program. The two-time national champion boasts an 834-293 career record and is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I.
Pace is coming off back-to-back 20-win campaigns, including a 20-11 record last season when the Setters earned the no. 5 seed in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
The Setters return their second-leading scorer from a year ago in graduate student Bryan Powell. The Middletown, N.Y., averaged 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 2022-23.
Entering his eighth year as head coach, Matt Healing will look to lead Pace to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season. During his first seven years leading the Setters, the two-time HoopDirt.com NCAA Division II Coach of the Year nominee has accumulated a 99-106 record.
