Eight new Hall of Famers enshrined on Saturday during the University’s Homecoming Weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Athletic Department inducted its 2023 Hall of Fame class on Saturday during an enshrinement ceremony inside D'Angelo Center on the University's Queens campus. The Hall of Fame's 24th induction class included eight individuals for their contributions to St. John's Athletics spanning six decades: Gus Alfieri, Erin Burner, Aliyyah Handford, Craig Hansen, Greg "Boo" Harvey, Ben Hickey, Diana Poulin and Bernard Rencher.
The evening began with an invocation from Campus Minister for Athletics Father Richard Rock, C.M., and opening remarks from Athletic Director Mike Cragg.
"This is a special night," said Cragg. "This is truly one of my favorite events of the year, not just to welcome in the newest class to the Hall of Fame, but to be back together on campus at St. John's University. I have a passion for St. John's as much as you do. That's the bond we all share."
All eight inductees took to the podium themselves and delivered poignant remarks about their time at St. John's and how it shaped them beyond the fields of play. Their experiences spanned generations and represented differing sports, but each honoree came back to how their time at St. John's changed their lives for the better.
Under the leadership of Cragg, St. John's brought back its Athletics Hall of Fame ceremonies in 2020 and then created Homecoming Weekend in 2021 to help bring former student-athletes and alumni back to campus.
In the third edition of St. John's Homecoming Weekend in 2023 nearly all of the Red Storm's Division I sports programs hosted on-campus events. The men's and women's soccer programs, as well as women's volleyball hosted regular season matches this year. The Red Storm's men's basketball and women's basketball programs each held competitions in Carnesecca Arena, while the baseball, softball and men's lacrosse teams hosted alumni reunion events around their intrasquad activities.
Overall, St. John's Homecoming Weekend brought alumni from all areas of the country back to campus this past weekend. With the creation of the St. John's Athletics Letterwinners Club, former student-athletes in all sports and spirit teams will stay even closer connected to the department.
Established in 1984-85, the St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame consists of nearly 200 members representing the majority of the Red Storm's current sports teams as well as discontinued programs. In addition to former student-athletes and coaches, administrators and honorary members have been inducted into the Hall for their valuable contributions and accomplishments during their time associated with St. John's Athletics.
