St. John’s to Travel to Xavier and Butler This Weekend

The Johnnies have won three out of four BIG EAST contests to start conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will stay on the road to face off against Xavier and Butler on Friday and Saturday.
The Johnnies will kick off the weekend on Friday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to face Xavier at the Cintas Center. The squad will then take the hike to Indianapolis, Ind. to battle Butler at 5 p.m. in the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Red Storm's match against Xavier will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports, with live stats available on GoXavier.com. Live stats will be available for Saturday's match against Butler on ButlerSports.com
Friday's contest will mark the 20th meeting in the all-time series between St. John's and Xavier. The Musketeers lead the series 12-7, including a 5-4 advantage at the Cintas Center. Their last meeting was on Nov. 13, 2022, when Xavier took down the Johnnies in straight sets in Cincinnati. Rachele Rastelli posted 14 kills and three blocks in the match. The Red Storm dropped last year's contest at Carnesecca Arena in five sets.
The Johnnies and the Bulldogs will battle for the 19th time on Saturday night. Butler leads the all-time series over St. John's, 10-8. In the last meeting on Nov. 4, 2022, St. John's took down Butler in straight sets at Carnesecca Arena, sparked by a Giorgia Walther double-double. The Johnnies also took down the Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse earlier in the campaign.
The Johnnies come into the weekend tied for second place in the BIG EAST with a conference record of 3-1 and an overall record of 11-5. Last week, St. John's went 1-1, taking down Seton Hall, 3-1, but falling to No. 16 Creighton in straight sets.
Rashanny Solano Smith followed up her Freshman of The Week nod by posting 37 digs across seven sets, averaging 5.29 per set against Seton Hall and Creighton. Against Seton Hall, the Limon, Costa Rica product posted 16 digs and four assists. She followed up her performance by recording 21 digs at seven per set against Creighton.
Erin Jones has continued to impress in her sophomore season, leading the Johnnies in points with 241.5, and kills with 217 at 3.62 per set, the fourth-best in the BIG EAST. The Albuquerque, N.M. native notched her fifth double-double of the season against Seton Hall last Wednesday, registering 10 kills, 18 assists and eight digs.
Ludovica Zola has become an efficient hitter for the Johnnies, hitting 44.2 percent which is the third-best in conference matches. She is also sitting in sixth in blocks, averaging 1.08 per set with 13 total.
Xavier enters the third week of BIG EAST competition, boasting a 3-1 conference record and a 10-5 overall record. The Musketeers provide a trio of offensive weapons in Delaney Hogan, Anna Taylor and Emma Grace. Hogan paces Xavier in kills, recording 136 at a 34.8 percent clip, the fourth best in the BIG EAST. Taylor has provided 130 kills and 22 blocks while Grace has posted 119 slams, 77 digs and a team-high 21 aces.
Butler comes into the weekend with a 1-3 record in the BIG EAST and is sitting at 7-8 overall. Butler's only conference win has been a straight-set victory over Villanova. Cora Taylor is the BIG EAST's leader in assists, registering 587 at 10.48 per set. Libero Jaymeson Kinley is Butler's leader in digs, recording 282 at 5.04 per set. Her 5.04 digs per set ranks second in the conference.
