CHARLESTON, S.C. – The St. John's men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic for the second time in as many appearances in the event by edging North Texas, 53-52, on Thursday at TD Arena. The Johnnies will next face Dayton (2-1) on Friday at 2 p.m. for a chance to compete in the tournament's title game on Sunday night.
Friday's semifinal matchup between St. John's (2-1) and the Flyers will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 with Chuckie Kempf and Perry Clark calling the action from Charleston, S.C. An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM and the SiriusXM App.
The Red Storm relied on veterans Joel Soriano and Daniss Jenkins to lift it past the Mean Green. Soriano helped anchor St. John's solid defensive effort with a career-high five blocks, which were the most by a Johnnie since Tariq Owens swatted eight against Georgetown on Jan. 9, 2018. The senior center scored nine of his 11 points in the second half and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Jenkins also shined for the Red Storm posting a game-high 17 points, including the 1,000th point of his Division I career. The graduate student from Dallas finished with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win over North Texas.
St. John's and Dayton will meet for the 11th time in a series that dates back to 1939. The programs have not met since Jan. 5, 1974, when the Flyers rallied to an 84-58 victory in Dayton, Ohio. St. John's last victory in the series was on Feb. 17, 1973, at Carnesecca Arena, formerly Alumni Hall, upending Dayton, 98-83.
Dayton is coming off a 70-67 victory over LSU in its quarterfinal matchup on Thursday. The Flyers rallied back from a 15-point deficit and used a 3-pointer from Nate Santos with 3.5 seconds left to upend the Tigers. Santos finished with a game-high 19 points, while Javon Bennett added 16 and Koby Brea had 13. The trio combined for 10 of the team's 11 3-pointers against LSU.
DaRon Holmes II, a 2023-24 Preseason All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection and a member of the league's Preseason All-Defensive Team, leads Dayton averaging 14.7 points this season to go with 6.3 rebounds per game.
The winner of Friday's contest will go on to play in the 2023 Charleston Classic championship game on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.
