St. John’s Drops Match to RV Marquette, 3-0

Erin Jones earned her 12th double-double of the season
MILWAUKEE – The St. John's volleyball team fell to RV Marquette in straight sets, 3-0, on Friday night inside the Al McGuire Center. The scores of the sets were 22-25, 17-25 and 22-25.
Erin Jones logged her 12th double-double of the season against Marquette. The sophomore tallied 12 kills at a 33.3 percent clip with 11 assists to go along with five digs. Giorgia Walther posted 10 kills with three total blocks.
Rashanny Solano Smith logged a team-high 12 digs. The Freshman also added three assists and an ace. Bree Martin contributed nine digs in the match.
Like she has all season, Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Red Storm in assists, contributing 19 helpers and four digs.
Ludovica Zola continued her dominant stretch at the net, racking up five denials, an ace and a kill.
Marquette's Jenna Reitsma totaled a team-high 12 kills with seven digs and three blocks. Yadhira Anchante tallied 32 assists while Sarah Kushner contributed 12 digs.
Jones paced St. John's (20-9, 12-5 BIG EAST) with five kills and five assists in the first game. The Johnnies kicked off the match with a 5-2 lead, but Marquette (19-9, 15-2 BIG EAST) logged three straight points to even the match out at 5 apiece. The Golden Eagles piled on five more consecutive points to take a 10-5 lead, forcing a St. John's timeout. The Red Storm put together a 6-1 run, featuring three kills from Jones, Magda Stambrowska and Walther to knot the frame back up at 11-11. Both squads battled through the middle of the frame, leading to a 20-20 tie. Marquette used a final 5-2 stretch to claim a first set victory, 25-22.
The second set of the match featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes. Neither the Johnnies nor the Golden Eagles could gain any significant momentum from the start of the second stanza, exchanging points to a 17-17 tie. The Golden Eagles took a two-point, 19-17 lead lead off back-to-back Red Storm attack errors, causing St. John's to call a timeout. Marquette never let up at the end of the frame, riding an 8-0 run to a 25-17 second set victory and a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Walther tallied six kills in the third set for the Red Storm. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the start of the third game. The two programs traded points until Marquette engineered a 5-1 run to give itself an eight-point, 16-14 advantage. The Johnnies responded right back with eight straight points of their own off a collection of kills and errors, tying the set at 16-all. Even at 21, the Golden Eagles produced a 4-1 run to secure the third set and the match, 25-22.
St. John's will travel to DePaul in Chicago tomorrow evening to polish off its regular season slate. First serve is set for 7 p.m. inside McGrath-Phillips Arena.
